You’d think that occasionally fake news or exaggerations make it to the pop gossip columns and blogs which stirs some trouble in the friendship. But no, time and time again Selena Gomez and Taylor Swift have proven that there friendship is unbreakable and stronger then ever.

And lucky for us, almost every year since they first met has been publicly documented meaning we have a complete timeline year on year, giving us 16 years of Taylor Swift and Selena Gomez friendship goals. So buckle up Swifties, strap in Selenators. Let’s get to it!

THE TIMELINE

Now if reading isn’t for you or you just want to save some photos to Pinterest or stare at them longingly, well I’ve got you. I’ll also go more in depth with the events in this timeline. So let’s start at the beginning…

2008

This is when Taylor Swift and Selena Gomez first became friends. They’d probably heard of each other before this, Selena was up and coming, as was Taylor, but they wouldn’t of met each other until this year.

Both Selena Gomez and Taylor Swift were each dating a Jonas brother (Swift was seeing Joe Jonas while Gomez was linked to Nick Jonas) as a result, they ended up hanging out, double dates and such, and so, ended up becoming close pals as a result.

August 2008

That was when they stepped out for dinner with Joe and Nick Jonas, whom they were respectively dating at the time.

In a 2017 interview with KISS FM UK, Gomez shared a humorous anecdote about her and Taylor's time together when they were both involved with the Jonas Brothers. Reflecting on those days, Gomez described the experience as "hysterical" and "amazing".

She vividly remembered Taylor as the girl with curly hair, a plethora of bracelets, and iconic cowboy boots. At that time, Gomez herself was just beginning to make her mark in the industry. Despite the differences in their rising careers, Gomez and Taylor had an instant connection. Gomez playfully joked that their experience with the Jonas Brothers was the best outcome they gained from those relationships.

Sept. 14, 2008

Taylor Swift supports Selena Gomez at Another Cinderella Story premiere.

This would be the first time they were spotted out as ‘friends’ and not just the girlfriends of those Jonas brother guys.

2009

During an interview with Seventeen, Gomez named Taylor as the friend she goes to for love advice. Saying "Every single problem I ever have is healable by Taylor Swift!"

2010

Nothing worth mentioning during this year. Let’s just assume they where both ringing each other nightly to talk about Twilight and whatever else was popular in 2010. Probably planning how they would both take over the world and become celebrity icons.

2011

2012

2012 we seen Taylor and Selena at the Teen Choice Awards. Selena Gomez won Choice Music Group. Taylor Swift won Choice Female Artist.

2013

Taylor Swift celebrates Selena Gomez's 21st birthday, by sharing a post on twittier which said, "Happy 21st birthday to my friend, and the closest thing I've ever had to a sister, @selenagomez!!"

2014

Taylor Swift and Selena Gomez attend the Met Gala together.

This was also the year we seen Selena Gomez celebrating Taylor Swift's 1989 release.

2015

Selena Gomez appears in Taylor Swift's "Bad Blood" music video as well as making a surprise appearance at Taylor Swift's 1989 tour.

2016

Taylor Swift and Selena Gomez attend the Grammys seemingly together. Taylor won Album won album of the Year for 1989. She was also rocking a look that would become iconic. hard to believe this was over 7 years ago.

This was also a year when Taylor Swift was dealing with the whole Kanye West drama and Kim Kardashian shared the voice recording of Tay Tay approving the lyrics Kanye wrote about her for famous. Selena seemingly ran to Taylor’s defence with some tweets about the industry and the fact there’s more important things in the world to worry about then the Taylor and Kanye drama. Which when you look back, I guess there was.

That being said it was fun to follow along as an outsider!

2017

Nothing much of note happened this year. Same old stuff, Public display of appreciation on there birthdays, few easter eggs here and there but that’s relatively it. At least publicly.

I mean, they were both pretty busy this year. So it’s understandable we didn’t get any award show snaps or friendship goal moments. Taylor Swift was just coming of the back of the whole Kanye drama by throwing herself into music and getting ready to release the absolute banger of an album Reputation which she did in November of 2017.

As for Selena, she was releasing new music herself, working on producing 13 Reason’s Why for Netflix and also going through a kidney transplant. So they were both respectably busy…

2018

2018 Reputation was out in the world and Taylor was taking it on tour via the Reputation tour. And who should so show her face and make a surprise appearance like always? Why Selena Gomez of course.

2019

Selena Gomez says she always runs new music by Taylor Swift first and that she "really leans on Taylor and considers her one of her best friends," which I mean, yeah, of course you’d run music by your best friend, especially if that friend was Taylor Swift. And yes, of course Taylor is your best mate, did you see the cake she sent you? That cake looks homemade af.

So lots of praises being sung this year. A little bit drama which I love is the time when Selena shared a photo of herself adoring skims on Instagram stories…

Now skims is Kim Kardashians brand and obviously, there’s all this drama with Kim K and Tay Tay right, its basically one or the other. So a lot of people were gossiping about a riff in the friendship of Selena and Taylor since she was promoting her enemies brand.

Then a few hours later Selena removed the photo and replaced it with this one of her and Taylor.

You’ve got to love the petty drama.

2020

This was another year of public admiration. Lots of tweets, captions and talks shows about each other. This is actually the year Selena opened up about how her and Taylor first met and said all that stuff about it being the best thing to come out of dating the Jonas.

2021

Once again, very similar to the last year. Both girls we’re busy so not much came out of this year friendship wise.

2022

Selena Gomez says Taylor Swift is her only friend in the industry and FINALLY we get another photo of the two together. This is the duo celebrating Selena’s 30th birthday together.

2023

This is the year the tables turned in terms of drama. Instead of Taylor going through something, it was Selena vs Hailey Bieber. Interestingly though, the whole thing kicked of after Hailey said she didn’t like a Taylor Swift song and Selena jumped to her defence. Things escalated quite quickly. With Hailey being with Justin Bieber, and Justin and Selena having a long and complicated relationship, you can see why this made great pop gossip.

Other then the drama, the two best friends also went to an award show together which was the first time they’d done that in years! Here’s the two at the 2023 VMA’s.

And that get’s us completely up to date. Selena is seemingly working more on acting with her Disney hit show Only Murders in the Building, and Taylor is currently busy on her Eras tour.

The only explanation for them being such good friends for such a long time is that they genuinely get on with each other. I’d assume that they have a solid foundation of trust, which when you’re a celebrity is hard to come by.

This is a question that comes up quite a lot in the Taylor and Selena world. Are they dating? Are they in a relationship, are they seeing each other, are they, well, you get the point. So are Selena Gomez and Taylor Swift dating, the answer is no. They are just friends.

That being said, if you research Gaylor, you’ll fall down a deep hole of Taylor Swift lesbian theories. And I wont lie to you, once you read into a few of these conspiracies, you actually start to believe it.

Surprisingly they do not have a song together. Although they have sang together plenty of times and performed side by side on stage. See the song Good for you by Selena Gomaz for an example, or the song Hands to Myself.

You have to wonder why. I mean, they both are in the same industry, they both make similar music, they both do plenty of collaborations and features, and they’re best friends. Why wouldn’t they want to do a song together?

But at the same time, keeping business and pleasure separate may be the answer to how they’ve managed to stay such good friends for such a long time.
