She says she married Liam Hemsworth for "New Age" reasons

Miley Cyrus married her boyfriend of nearly a decade, actor Liam Hemsworth, in a low-key ceremony in late December. With the exception of candid photos posted by the newlyweds on social media, Cyrus, 26,hasn’t shared anything about the nuptials—until now. The outspoken singer-songwriter is opening up about all things love and romance in a Vanity Fair cover story for the new March issue, saying that she and Hemsworth are redefining being queer person in a heterosexual relationship.

“I think the reason we got married isn’t old-fashioned—I actually think it’s kind of New Age,” Cyrus tells Vanity Fair. “We’re redefining, to be f*cking frank, what it looks like for someone that’s a queer person like myself to be in a hetero relationship.”

Cyrus goes on to say that she falls in love on a spiritual level. “A big part of my pride and my identity is being a queer person,” she says. “What I preach is: People fall in love with people, not gender, not looks, not whatever. What I’m in love with exists on almost a spiritual level. It has nothing to do with sexuality. Relationships and partnerships in a new generation—I don’t think they have so much to do with sexuality or gender. Sex is actually a small part, and gender is a very small, almost irrelevant part of relationships.”

Prior to tying the knot, Cyrus and Hemsworth dated on and off for almost 10 years. The couple first started dating in 2009 while filming The Last Song and got engaged in 2012. They broke up from 2013 until 2016, and in the intervening three-year period, Cyrus was linked to Patrick Schwarzenegger and rumored to have dated model Stella Maxwell. She later came out as identifying as pansexual and gender-fluid.

In an October 2015 interview with Elle UK, Cyrus said: “I’m very open about it—I’m pansexual. But I’m not in a relationship. I’m 22, I’m going on dates, but I change my style every two weeks, let alone who I’m with.”

The following year, when appearing onVariety’s Power of Women issue, she spoke about how she came to identify as pansexual and gender-neutral. “I think [I first identified as pansexual] when I figured out what it was. I went to the LGBTQ center here in L.A., and I started hearing these stories. I saw one human in particular who didn’t identify as male or female. Looking at them, they were both: beautiful and sexy and tough but vulnerable and feminine but masculine,” she said. “And I related to that person more than I related to anyone in my life. Even though I may seem very different, people may not see me as neutral as I feel. But I feel very neutral. I think that was the first gender-neutral person I’d ever met. Once I understood my gender more, which was unassigned, then I understood my sexuality more. I was like, ‘Oh — that’s why I don’t feel straight and I don’t feel gay. It’s because I’m not.’”

While Cyrus doesn’t quite explain what she means by “New Age” in Vanity Fair (we talking crystals and transcendental mediation or what?), she goes on to say she embraced a more traditional appearance on her wedding day because she “felt like it,” and not because getting married means she’s suddenly a “polite hetero lady.”

In a short essay written by Cyrus that appears within the Vanity Fairprofile, she writes:“I wore a dress on my wedding day because I felt like it, I straightened my hair because I felt like it, but that doesn’t make me become some instantly ‘polite hetero lady.” She adds,“PS: Straight women are badass, too.”

Because we’ve watched Miley Cyrus grow up since her tweeny bopper Hannah Montana days, here’s a look at Miley’s style evolution:
