Lehigh Valley College Corner: Freedom grad reaches milestone for Misericordia lacrosse (2024)

It was only a matter of time before sophom*ore Connor Bevan scored his 100th career point for the Misericordia men’s lacrosse team and the suspense ended in the first minute of the game last Saturday.

The 5-foot-9 attack, a Freedom High graduate, scored the quick goal and added three more scores along with four assists as the Cougars topped King’s 21-9 in Wilkes-Barre. He has 103 goals and 53 assists for 156 points in less than two seasons. His goals stand 12th in the team record book.

Andrew Hauk took over as Misericordia coach last season and right away he knew the Cougars had a good one when Bevan scored nine goals with two assists for a school record 11 points the lead the team to a 22-5 season-opening victory over Russell Sage. He finished that season with 51 goals and 26 assists for 77 points. This season, he has 52 goals and 17 assists for 79 points. Bevan has scored at least one goal in 33 of 34 games.

Misericordia is 8-7 overall and stands fourth in MAC Freedom play at 3-2 with two regular-season games remaining before the conference tournament begins on May 1. The Cougars lost to eventual champion Stevens in last year’s semifinals.

Danika Barthol – Eastern softball (Emmaus)

The freshman right-hander continues her sparkling season pitching for the Eagles, who are 25-4 overall and on top of the MAC Commonwealth with an 11-1 record.

Barthol is 12-1 with a 0.61 ERA and a .66 WHIP. She has pitched in 15 games with 14 starts and has nine complete games with three shutouts. In 80 innings, Barthol has given up 39 hits and nine runs, seven earned, with 14 walks and 98 strikeouts. The victories, ERA, strikeouts and shutouts all lead the MAC Commonwealth.

Alicia Rodriguez – Mount Saint Vincent (New York) women’s lacrosse (Easton)

The junior midfielder is a standout all-around player for the Dolphins who are 4-9 overall and 2- 5 in the Skyline Conference after losing 21-11 to Farmingdale State at home last Saturday in Riverdale, New York. Rodriguez had six goals and three assists. She scored nine goals in an 18-14 win over Manhattanville.

She has 63 goals and 21 assists for 84 points. She also has 82 ground balls, 43 caused turnovers and 91 draw controls. She leads the conference in goals, points, ground balls and draw controls and is second in caused turnovers.

Bellamy Immanuel – Eastern Mennonite (Virgina) men’s track (Allen)

The junior had a busy, but productive, week as a distance runner for the Royals. He finished
first out of 48 entrants in the 1,500-meter run at the Wildcat Invitational last weekend in Lynchburg, Virginia, and he did it with a personal record time of 3:59.14. Last Wednesday he
competed in the Shippensburg Mid-Week PR Bonanza meet and finished first in both the 800-meter run and 5,000-meter run. His time in the 800 was 1:57.1 and his time in the 5,000 was 15:21.94.

Wyatt Henseler – Penn baseball (Emmaus)

The senior continues to have an outstanding season with the Quakers who are 15-20 overall
and 7-8 in the Ivy League after splitting a league doubleheader last Saturday at Princeton. He
has started all 35 games and leads the team in hitting .346, hits (47-for-136), home runs with
16, runs batted in with 40 and runs scored with 39.

He had a two-homer game in a 22-8 nonleague victory over Lafayette on March 17. In the field, the third baseman has made two errors on 88 chances (.977),

Ben Ortwein – Rider men’s golf (Notre Dame-Green Pond)

The sophom*ore had a big finish to earn medalist honors at the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championships last weekend on Disney’s Palm Course in Lake Buena Vista, Florida.

After opening with a 74, Ortwein fashioned back-to-back rounds of three-under-par 69 for a 212 total to finish first by a stroke. He averaged 73.95 in 22 rounds during the regular season.

The Broncs finished third in the team standings with an 868 total, six strokes behind champion Siena.

Daphney Adams – York softball (Nazareth)

The graduate student is having a big season with the Spartans who are 19-13 overall and 8-4
in the MAC Commonwealth Conference after a 16-3 victory at Hood last Saturday. Adams had a double, two singles and two runs batted in. She is hitting .413 (39-for-93) with a team-high 16 doubles, two triples and four home runs with 34 runs scored and 35 RBIs.

A catcher, she has made nine errors on 192 chances (.953) and has thrown out 11 of 32 would-be base stealers.

Riley Langen – Elizabethtown men’s lacrosse (Moravian Academy)

The 6-foot-3 graduate student is having a solid season for the Blue Jays who are 9-5 overall
and leading the Landmark Conference with a 7-0 record after a 30-5 conference victory over
Wilkes last Saturday in Elizabethtown.

Langen had two goals and an assist. He is second on the team in scoring with 46 points. He has 24 goals and 22 assists with two game winners. He had back-to-back games with five goals and an assist – in a 19-6 victory over Drew on April 6 and a 17-7 triumph over Moravian on April 10.

Emily Strunk – St. Thomas Aquinas (N.Y.) women’s track (Stroudsburg)

The junior finished first in the shot put at the All-American meet last Friday in East Stroudsburg.

She posted a toss of 43 feet, 1 ½ inches. The victory gave her a 4-0 record in that event this spring. She had a season-best toss of 43 feet, 11 ¼ inches in the Coach Omeltchenko Invitational on April 7 in Kings Point, N.Y. That is the top performance in the East Coast
Conference.

Strunk also competes in the discus throw for the Spartans and she finished fourth at the All-American with a heave of 101 feet, 9 inches.

Leyti Ndiaye – Washington & Lee (Virginia) men’s track (East Stroudsburg South)

The sophom*ore is coming up big in the high jump for the Generals. He finished first in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Indoor Championships last February with a 6-foot, 5-inch effort.

This spring, Ndiaye has a first and two seconds in three meets. He finished first at the North River Meeting on April 13 in Bridgewater, Virginia, with a height of 6 feet, 1 ½ inches and last Saturday he finished second with a 6 foot, ¾ inch effort in the Hopkins Loyola Invite in Baltimore. His career best is 6 feet, 5 ½ inches.

Jada Carter – Bethany (W.Va.) women’s lacrosse (Freedom)

The 5-foot-4 sophom*ore midfielder is doing it on both ends of the field for the Bison who are 4-10 overall and 2-5 in the Presidents Athletic Conference.

Carter leads the team in goals with 34 and has six assists for 40 points. She had five goals and three assists in a 20-4 victory over Mt. St. Joseph’s and six goals in a 22-15 loss to Muskingum. She had five goals and an assist in a 13-6 win over Waynesburg.

Carter also leads the team in caused turnovers with 22 and is tied for second in ground balls with 27.
